Thousands Now Lose Weight Who Never Thought They Could ...With 3 Simple Rules

Caloric Intake the Biggest Contributor to Obesity NOT Lack of Physical Activity

New research** presented on May 8, 2009 at the European Congress on Obesity concluded that the development of the obesity epidemic in the United States since the 1970s was due almost exclusively to increased caloric intake.

The study's leader, Professor Boyd Swinburn, chair of population health and director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University in Australia, said:

"There have been a lot of assumptions that both reduced physical activity and increased energy intake have been major drivers of the obesity epidemic..."

"This study demonstrates that the weight gain in the American population is attributed to eating more calories."

"It appears that changes in physical activity played a minimal role in obesity development."

He added, "in order to return to the average weights of the 70s..."

  • children would have to consume about 350 calories less each day
  • adults would have to consume about 500 calories less each day

Exercise Still Important

Although there is strong evidence that caloric intake is the leading cause of obesity, physical activity should not be ignored because it carries additional health benefits and can contribute to weight loss.

More Helpful Strategies

Some other strategies that can help to effectively manage your weight — eat slowly, while seated; give yourself credit for resisting cravings; set realistic weight loss goals; plan every meal in advance and make time to relax.
